El trabajo caracteriza la funci\u00f3n, hasta ahora desconocida, del gen pegasus, que codifica una peque\u00f1a prote\u00edna necesaria para el correcto funcionamiento de una importante v\u00eda de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n celular.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Un grupo de investigaci\u00f3n del Centro Andaluz de Biolog\u00eda del Desarrollo (CABD), centro mixto del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas (CSIC), de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO) y de la Junta de Andaluc\u00eda, avanza en el estudio de los genes con pauta de lectura corta, (small open Reading frame genes<\/em>,\u00a0smORFs<\/strong>) gracias la identificaci\u00f3n del\u00a0p\u00e9ptido Pegasus<\/strong>\u00a0como un nuevo elemento en la v\u00eda de difusi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna Wingless (Wg), una de las mol\u00e9culas de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n celular m\u00e1s importante para el desarrollo animal e implicada en varios tipos de c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

Tomando como organismo modelo\u00a0Drosophila melanogaster<\/em>\u00a0(mosca de la fruta), el equipo dirigido por\u00a0Juan Pablo Couso<\/strong>\u00a0es pionero en la identificaci\u00f3n y clasificaci\u00f3n de estos peque\u00f1os genes, demostrando que algunos de ellos tienen relevantes funciones como reguladores de la contracci\u00f3n muscular o de procesos relacionados con el sistema inmune. \u201cLos smORFs son una enigm\u00e1tica clase de genes que codifican peque\u00f1os p\u00e9ptidos (prote\u00ednas de menos de 100 amino\u00e1cidos) y apenas en la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada hemos descubierto que decenas de miles de estos genes pueden existir en cada genoma animal, lo que desaf\u00eda las ideas aceptadas sobre el potencial de nuestros genomas\u201d, explica el investigador\u00a0Emile Magny<\/strong>\u00a0y miembro del equipo del CABD, quien a\u00f1ade que la funci\u00f3n de la gran mayor\u00eda de estos genes a\u00fan se desconoce…<\/p>\n
